One of the most enchanting of these lie in Thiruvananthapuram district – the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Home to a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles, trees, plants, herbs and shrubs, the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one destination that gifts a traveller with splendid sights of hills, valleys and dense forest lands.

Spread across a whopping 12000 hectares of land, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best picnic spots near Thiruvananthapuram. The Agasthyamala Peak which is 1868 m high is one of the attractions of the region. Then there is the beautiful Neyyar Dam that welcomes a traveller by laying a lush green carpet. Some of the other attractions here include a Watch Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the surroundings, a Deer Park, a Lion Safari Park and a Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre. At the reservoir area of the dam, you can avail of boating services. Neyyar Sanctuary also has a few trekking trails for adventurous travellers.
